The Rhythm of the Stone

A celebrated spine surgeon comes home to bury her father. The cure he left behind can only be made in the rhythm of the dance she abandoned.

Dr. Vedika is mid-surgery at Johns Hopkins when she learns her father has died in Wai, the Maharashtrian temple town she left twenty-five years ago. She flies home to sell his failing Ayurveda factory.

Instead she finds twelve sealed letters, each named for a beat of a twelve-beat rhythm, and proof that her father cured soldiers of blast-nerve damage with a paste he could never make again.

The missing step is rhythm. The pestle must strike in the pattern of Kathak bols, and only Vedika can lead it. That means going back to the dance she gave up after a stage injury. As an enquiry, a pharma rival and a saboteur close in, she has to choose between the life she built and the father she left.
